Punch cartoons by Charles Keene. A forerunner to George Du Maurier and Phil May, Keene's excellent line work from the 1850s to the 1890s developed the cartoon further while having a strong social element covering the pretensions of the working and middle classes. From 1872 his friendship with Joseph Crawhall provided around 250 humorous observations for which Keene could base his cartoons. The artists Walter Sickert and Adolph Menzel were fans of Keene's work, Menzel taking out a subscription of Punch solely to enjoy Keene's latest cartoons.
