Phil May Cartoons

27 images Created 10 Oct 2011

Punch cartoons by Phil May. Concise in style and caption, but beautifully drawn, Phil May's cartoons on the Working Classes at the end of the Victorian era and the start of the Edwardian period greatly modernised PUNCH magazine's look. His jokes were splendidly observed and have the feeling of street photography taken on the ground and often depicted Street Urhins, Omnibus travel, shops, pubs and aggravated wives; all reflecting the general spirit of the English lower classes in London.
